Safety and approval: what to know about an electric vehicle for children

Electric vehicle safety for children

An electric vehicle for children is a toy, but also a movement tool. Here are the features that make it safe to use — and what Italian law really allows.

Mandatory security checks

  • Seat belts: Check if the model has any, at 1 point, 3 points or 5 points depending on speed and age.
  • 2.4GHz parental remote control: allows the parent to drive the vehicle remotely or brake in case of emergency. Basic function for children 1–5 years old.
  • Progressive departure (soft start): avoids jerks at the start, protects the spine and accustoms the child to the gesture.
  • Automatic brake when the pedal is released: the vehicle stops when the child lifts his foot from the accelerator.
  • Adjustable maximum speed: on almost all Motique models there are two or three speed levels, to be activated based on the child's experience.

Where can it be used?

Motique children's electric vehicles are toys and must be used in private areas: courtyards, gardens, private car parks, fenced areas. They are not approved for circulation on public roads (that requires a licence/plate/insurance, intended only for road vehicles).

The U8 scooter it is a special case: it is electric and reaches 16 km/h. In Italy, the electric scooter for use on public roads requires compliance with specific regulations (minimum age, insurance, max power). Private use is always permitted.

Practical advice for the first round

  1. Charge the battery fully (8–10 hours).
  2. Start with minimum speed.
  3. Use the parental remote for the first few rides.
  4. Explain to the child the accelerator pedal (or knob, on motorcycles and motocross).
  5. Add auxiliary wheels on two-wheeled models if the child does not yet have balance.
